This year, Sunlake’s Soaring Sound Marching Band had an intriguing show where they enacted a rendition of the kids book, The Giving Tree. Throughout the show, a huge tree prop was taken down slowly to go along with the plot of the original book. The transformation of the tree was a unique showstopper; it helped convey the storyline of taking and giving until there was nothing left but a stump. During the season, the marching band’s wind section had a complete transformation on their level of achievement and performance both visually and musically. The students in band were constantly being challenged by the demand of the show and the staff. Nonetheless, they rose to the expectations and put their best efforts forward. Students gained applicable life skills like discipline, responsibility, leadership, self-esteem, professionalism, musicianship, and sportsmanship. The whole season was described as a delightful challenge. The show started as nothing but a concept and ink on a page and it transformed into a meaningful and recognizable story that audiences were able to come together and enjoy. The band went up a class during the season, going from 3A to 4A. The marching band also had an impressive competition season winning 3rd place in their class and Best Overall Color Guard at Oviedo, 2nd in their class and Best Class Percussion at Gaither, 1st in their class and Best Auxiliary, Percussion, Visual Performance, General Effect, and Drum Major at Tarpon Springs Outdoor Music Festival, and got the class Superior at MPA in Pasco High School. All of the students came together with their different skill sets—from clarinets, to trombones, to the guard—to create a masterful visual and auditory performance that had spectators from all around clapping and asking for more. Overall, the season was a fulfilling journey of growth for Sunlake’s Soaring Sound marching band; the students got to perform what they love, and the audience got to experience a beautiful, memorable show.
