Competing in a triathlon is no small feat, but for Sunlake junior Gabriel Martinez, the challenge became a legendary moment of growth and accomplishment. Balancing swimming, biking, and running in a single race pushed both his physical and mental limits, yet the experience proved to be well worth the effort.
The event was during the week of December 8th-12th, and Gabe’s nerves were high! During the race, Martinez said he was “mostly feeling happy and grateful I get to do what I love doing,” an attitude that carried him all the way to a spectacular 3rd place finish in the 16–19 year-old category. His motivation to compete came from an awesome place. “What made me want to compete in a triathlon was mostly to prove to myself that I’m capable of doing anything as long as I put in the effort and dedication,” Martinez shared.
Like any endurance event, the triathlon came with its challenges. The most difficult part was the 35-mile bike ride, where physical strain began to set in. “After an hour my lower back started getting sore because of the position of the handlebars on the bike,” he explained. Still, pushing through discomfort became part of the test.
Standing at the starting line brought nerves, but those feelings didn’t last long. “I was feeling mostly nervous, but with the help of the other people in the triathlon that nervous feeling became a feeling of excitement,” Martinez said. That sense of community carried through the entire race.
Crossing the finish line was an unforgettable moment for Martinez. He described an “immense feeling of fulfillment,” along with deep gratitude for the constant support of his parents. Ultimately, the most rewarding part of the experience was the connections made along the way. “Making new friends during the race and seeing how everyone supported each other throughout the race” stood out most.
Gabe’s advice to other student-athletes is simple but powerful: “stop planning and start doing. as long as you want to get better and you put in the effort, everything will fall into place.”
