Abigail Rhodes; Sophomore, is a talented artist who used her skills in her 2d Studio Art class to create numerous pieces that anyone would find impressive. In particular, she made a drawing of Salvador Dali using the grid method. The grid method involves creating a grid on an image you want to replicate with a matching grid on a blank piece of paper. Then, you copy each box onto your paper.
Abigail said that she chose to draw Salvador Dali for her project for a reason. She mentioned, “He is one of my favorite artists… I love the museum, I’d like to go again.” She’s a big fan of Dali’s unique style of surrealism and the way he presented his works, as well as the Salvador Dali museum in St. Petersburg, FL.

During the drawing process, Abigail noticed her drawing habits. She said, “In general, I feel like when drawing I focus on the small details first. I don’t really do thumbnail sketches.” Skipping that part of process can be detrimental to some, but Abagail creates high quality art despite that.
Abigail enjoyed this project, however, while doing it she was reminded of one of her goals in art. This project involved copying a pre-existing image. While Dali’s paintings mostly involved grabbing pictures from his own mind. Abigail stated, “He used that from his mind and I think that’s awesome. I want to think of something and be able to put it on paper.” This is the ultimate goal of any artist. Being able to draw straight from the mind with high detail is an extremely impressive skill.
It may have been an easy project for her, but it definitely came with new lessons. She will continue to improve her art ability and one day achieve her goals.
