Senior Night is meant to be a time of pride and celebration — a night when players, families, and fans come together to honor the seniors who have given their all to the program. But for the Sunlake Seahawks, this year’s game against Wesley Chapel turned into a test of resilience. The Seahawks fell 30–0 in a difficult matchup, struggling to establish a good rhythm. Quarterback Hayes McGuire, reflected honestly on the experience after the game. “I was a little upset after the last game. We had a tough loss, but we’re playing football. The biggest thing you have to do is move on, so my thoughts were on the next game.” despite the loss, Hayes kept up team morale and was already looking forward to the next game. Hayes was able to keep his emotions on the field and learn from the experience.

Out on the field, things can get tough in the heat of the moment. Hayes mentioned, “Some things can get a little frustrating, but I try to keep my calm and stay levelheaded.” Him and his teammates are always giving it their all, despite any difficulties they may face. Even in defeat, McGuire’s composure stood out. He was quick to shift the focus from disappointment to determination, setting an example for his teammates. One challenge that the Seahawks have faced was ‘mental mistakes’. The team had been receiving small penalties that messed up their flow during the game. That may have cost the Seahawks valuable yardage and disrupted their offensive flow. “That dropped us back and messed up our momentum.” Despite those setbacks, McGuire emphasized the team’s work ethic and collective effort. Each week, the players show up determined to improve, learn, and give everything they have, regardless of the score.
Hayes had one big takeaway from the game. “The biggest takeaway I had was to cherish my senior season while it lasts.” He’s going to enjoy the season despite any losses, and enjoy his time out on the field.
After tough games, Hayes is able to stay motivated because of his other teammates and his ability to perform out on the field. While the scoreboard didn’t reflect the effort on Senior Night, the Seahawks walked away with something equally important. Experience and team unity. With the season winding down, Sunlake’s focus remains on progress and perseverance, one game at a time.
