Sunlake’s boys’ soccer team kicked off their season with a confident and composed performance, led in part by senior goalkeeper Jack Hanzlik, who wore the number 1 jersey with pride. Hanzlik, a movie-loving senior who also enjoys watching soccer off the field, stepped into the opening match carrying both excitement and nervous energy.
“Going into the first game, I felt nervous,” Hanzlik admitted. “I knew the team we were playing against wasn’t the best, so that helped a bit, but I still didn’t want to make a mistake.” For a goalkeeper, one wrong move can change an entire match, and that weight sat on his shoulders. “If I make a mistake, we get scored on and could lose the game because of me.”
Despite the pressure, Hanzlik delivered exactly what the team needed: a clean sheet in his very first outing of the season. His performance wasn’t the only highlight—he was quick to point out the team’s unexpected cohesion. “I was a little surprised by how well the team played together. Being our first game, I wasn’t sure if we had enough chemistry built up, but we really did.”
Hanzlik credited much of his composure to his teammates. “They kept me relaxed and alert. Having that support behind me made all the difference.” That connection gave him early confidence about the team’s potential. “I learned that the team would be competitive this season, and that we should do very well.”
Looking ahead, Hanzlik already knows where he wants to grow. As the season continues, he hopes to sharpen his communication from the back line and improve his passing accuracy—two skills that can elevate the entire squad’s performance.
With leadership like Hanzlik’s and early signs of strong teamwork, Sunlake fans have plenty to look forward to this season.
