On Thursday the 20th of November, 2 weeks before thanksgiving break, the Sunlake High Schools American Sign Language (ASL) honor society/ Club had meeting for the board members to discuss plans for the upcoming month, their ideas for their informational display, and volunteer opportunities. There present at the meeting was Marie Cartwright, the Junior who’s in charge of the club, the President. With her position, she has many jobs, some of those being that she” leads the meetings, suggest ideas to expand and improve our Honor society, and set a responsible example.” Marie joined “because I think our school has a great group of students wanting to learn ASL and I find a lot of interest in expanding my knowledge on ASL.” She’s in ASL 3 honors, and well versed in the arts of this spectacular language, she loves to sign “Love it! and “Oh, I see” while at club. During the club, member do many ASL related activities, and plan ways the school club can connect with external ASL communities around the neighborhood and more.
Yet, why is it so important to have an ASL club/ Society in the school and outside in the public? Well, not only does it bring people together, it create a welcoming community for people who want to learn about ASL and people who’s know the language. In addition, being in the society has a great benefit on student applications to their next step after high school, College. This shows that the student has the ability to “excel in a language, but also connect with the school.” Marie definitely recommends this club for anyone who is interested, she says “It has such an amazing group of people. We do fun things, and it is good for the future!” You’ll find the club in Mrs. Blomeley’s room. To join, students only have to be in ASL 2 or higher, make sure their grade is a B or higher, and “have a passion in learning ASL!”
