Junior Nathan Merriman on the boys weightlifting team had a meet that set the expectation for the rest of the season. “Coach said this year we’re not lifting individually, we’re going to do everything as a team.” A more collaborative approach to lifting can work as a huge motivator for the members of the team and an overall increase to performance. The team members have already began to reflect that change in attitude during practices. The weightlifting coach made it clear that they’re approaching this season with a higher sense of focus and discipline. Nathan noted the difference in effort, stating, “Everyone is taking practice serious. We’re not just going in the weight room and messing around.”
The new weightlifting coach emphasized it was important that members remain focused during their training. Nathan expressed confidence in what he hopes to achieve throughout the season. When asked about his individual goals, he said, “I want to get a 275 pound clean and jerk and a 365 pound bench press.” Both benchmarks represent significant achievements in the sport of weightlifting and require months of dedication and training. Setting goals of that caliber highlights the determination shared by Nathan and his teammates as they push themselves to become stronger, more disciplined, and more unified as a team.

Besides his strength goals, Nathan also identified other goals that he hopes to achieve throughout the season. Nathan emphasized the need to work on proper form, especially when lifting heavier weights. He said, “A lot of weightlifting is form and if you’re not completely serious your forms gonna be off and you can hurt yourself.” Proper form does not only help the team to perform better, but it also helps to prevent injuries that could hinder the success of the team. By being keen on proper form and taking the sport seriously, the weightlifting team seeks to create a safe platform for training while at the same time reaching their maximum potential.
The Sunlake Boys Weightlifting team is looking to make this year their best. Their dedication to getting stronger as a team is an inspiration to everybody at Sunlake High School.
