Gianna Fotopoulos is a senior at Sunlake High School and is a part of Sunlake’s basketball team. Gianna recently celebrated her senior night. She has been playing basketball since sixth grade. Gianna has played a very important role in Sunlake Girls’ basketball over the past four years. Gianna plays a few different positions, such as guard, point, and shooting.
Senior night itself was everything Gianna hoped it would be. The atmosphere was full of love, support, and appreciation from teammates, coaches, family, and fans. “I felt so loved and appreciated, which made the last four years of playing all worth it,” Gianna shared. That emotion carried over into the game, which perfectly reflected the togetherness of the team.
To honor the seniors – Gianna, Charity, and Adrienne – they were kept on the court the whole night. Every few minutes, two players were subbed in from the bench, allowing the seniors to share the floor with every teammate. The result was a special, once-in-a-lifetime experience that showcased the team’s chemistry. Sunlake dominated the game, beating Lando and mercy-ruling them, with everyone contributing on offense and making big plays. The team was strong, unselfish, and full of energy.
Gianna’s favorite moment of the evening was when her parents walked her down the line, and she had the chance to speak to her teammates. “Getting to share words of wisdom with my teammates while my parents were by my side is something I’ll never forget,” she said. Fans can relive some of these moments by checking out clips on Instagram at @lakegirlsbball.
The night wasn’t without its bittersweet moments. One of the seniors, Alia, was unable to play due to injury. Not having her on the court was Gianna’s least favorite part of the night, knowing how much she deserved this moment. Still, Alia’s impact on the team remains undeniable—”a baller in our hearts,” states Gianna.
Looking ahead, Gianna plans to attend a four-year university in Florida, where she hopes to pursue her dream of becoming an athletic trainer.
