The sound of sneakers squeaking on the court is the only thing you hear. The Seahawks and the Pirates are fighting over control of the ball, trying to be the last one standing. That’s what it means to be part of the girls’ basketball team: to fight and come out on top. And Allison Poll; Junior, knows all about it. Allison has been on the basketball team for three years, playing for varsity as a junior, wearing the number 10. Over the past three years, she has grown from being alongside her teammates as a freshman looking to make a change into a star varsity player who helps her team dominate it’s opponents and produces so much talent. Allison says that being on the basketball team is “Great. It pushes me to be better, and it’s a lot of fun, but it’s also very focused.” Focus is absolutely right. To be a varsity player for Sunlake means to be focused, passionate, and strong. Before games, she just tells herself that “It’s okay. If you go in, just do what you’re supposed to do. If you make a mistake, just forget about it and move on. Always be energetic.” When asked about her experience against the Pasco Pirates, Allison just shrugged her shoulders with a radiating confidence. “We won by a lot. They’re not the strongest of teams, so I think that it pushes us to not play down to a lower level,” she explained. It is important in sports not to reduce your value as a player by playing easy against another team, and she completely understands that. That is what makes Allison and her teammates great players: their ability to play hard no matter what and the confidence that they play with. When asked about what she thought the team could’ve done differently, Allison answered that they could’ve “stopped their point guard from going in between us. She did get to the basket a lot. Just moving our feet on defense would have helped.” That’s another win on the stat sheet for the Seahawks, and the name Allison Poll is one that no one will ever forget.
