Sunlake’s matchup against Pasco may have ended in a win, but the game itself tested the team in ways that didn’t always show up on the scoreboard. Heading into the game, Senior Adrienne Martin knew exactly what she wanted from herself. “I wanted to make sure that I didn’t play down to their level,” she said. For Martin, staying consistent was the priority, especially in a game where it was easy to lose focus early.
Early on, the team realized something was off. The energy wasn’t where it normally was, and Pasco was hanging around longer than expected. “We realized early on that we started the game off slower than usual,” Martin explained. Instead of panicking, the team knew they had to respond by bringing more intensity and effort.

That shift started with encouragement. Players began hyping each other up and boosting confidence on the court. One moment that stood out to Martin wasn’t a single play, but when teammates started speaking up and reminding everyone that they needed to pick it up. Those reminders helped refocus the team and bring them back together.
Communication quickly became a turning point in the game. Martin noted that when Sunlake wasn’t talking, bad plays started to happen and the defense struggled, but once the team began communicating more, it showed immediately. Defensive rotations improved; mistakes were cleaned up, and Sunlake looked more like themselves.
Through it all, Martin said the team tried to keep their heads high. “The challenge wasn’t the opposing team but our own heads,” she said. Despite the slow start, Sunlake stayed together and pushed through, ultimately securing the win.
Looking back, Martin said the game was an important reminder moving forward. Every opponent deserves full effort, regardless of record or reputation. “We need to play every team like they’re our greatest opposition,” she said. The game showed that even strong teams can have setbacks, but what defines them is how they respond. For Sunlake, the response was clear: communicate, support one another, and keep moving forward.
