Caleb Gray Sophomore; For the past seven and a half years, hockey has been an important part of Caleb’s life. He decided to join Cypress Creek Hockey because he wanted the opportunity to play high school hockey while also continuing with travel hockey. Being able to compete at both levels gave him the experience and competition he was looking for, and it allowed him to grow as a player in different environments.
Throughout his time on the ice, Caleb has learned lessons that go far beyond the sport itself. The biggest lesson, he says, is perseverance. No matter how tough a game gets or how far behind the team might be, giving up is never an option. He believes that mindset applies to everyday life just as much as it does to hockey. As Caleb explains, “Don’t give up no matter what. Even if you think you’re playing bad, or even if you think the whole world is against you, don’t give up.” This attitude has helped him stay focused and determined during difficult moments.
Caleb credits much of his development to his former skating coach, Serguei. He says Serguei pushed him to his limits and helped him improve in ways he didn’t think were possible. The high expectations and constant motivation played a big role in shaping Caleb into the player he is today.
Balancing school and hockey takes careful time management. With practices and games filling up his schedule, Caleb often uses his lunch period to complete assignments and stay on top of his work. Staying organized allows him to succeed both in the classroom and on the ice.
Although hockey has been a major part of his high school experience, Caleb plans to pursue photography after graduation. Even if hockey doesn’t determine his college choice, the discipline and perseverance he has gained will stay with him long after high school.
