I had the opportunity to speak with Angel Delgado, a junior and pitcher for the Varsity Baseball team here at Sunlake High School. Discussing his mindset going into the game, he was “…locked in…” and the team understood exactly the importance of getting the win after a loss just a week before. But, in a very exciting twist, Sunlake secured their win at home against River Ridge, their second win this season over River Ridge, and their fifth straight win at home. Angel was a big part of the team’s success while stepping up to the plate, he went 1-for-3 with one run and one RBI. When asked what the most important part of being a pitcher was for the game, he discussed how preventing runs from the opposite team and securing wins and learning to read the different types of pitches, whether it be inside or outside pitches is extremely important. As he described “…some hitters hit different types of pitches better, the inside pitch they could pull it or the outside pitch they could hit off…” Either way, it’s important to react the best way so a win can be easily secured. Asking Angel how the team responded to the tough moments, he explained that the team’s friendship was there to support all the players by “…cheering us on no matter who was hitting…” But what play stood out to Angel most in the outfield was “…in the gap he got an out and there was a runner on the third…” Ultimately, Angel’s hit was an important part of the game, securing “…the first IVR of the game…” and leading Sunlake to victory. The proudest part of his performance was the “…passed ball, IQ and running the bases…”
