Last year, Pasco County joined other parts of Florida and finally included Girls Flag Football in their options for sports teams. One girl that decided to join the team last year was Gwyn Taylor, making this her second year as a player. She plays wide receiver, which is the player that catches passes from the quarterback to gain yards or get touchdowns. She said, “I really enjoy playing it’s super fun and everyone’s so sweet.” The team in just one year has become a very close-knit community.
So far, we have a winning record this season with the first one being a blowout. Gwyn stated, “Our game last week against Pasco went really good, we won 57-0!” This was a great win for us and showed how capable our team is. This game we had 61 rushing yards, 222 receiving yards, and 233 passing yards. We also had 9 sacks and 8 touchdowns! This sport for our school is showing great success already and will continue to grow.
In order to achieve our new successes, it is important to create a community around the team. By being closer off the field, it can compute to great on field chemistry. Even from the very beginning, Gwyn Taylor had a community with her. She said, “I tried out with two of my best friends, Mia Walter and Mara Crockett. We have met and connected with all the girls on the team!” These growing friendships lead to confidence in each other and trust while playing. Gwyn also stated that her favorite part of playing is that they all get to celebrate and support each other. This team is a great example of how at the base of success is a strong community.
