Junior Calem Sheppard recently stepped into the spotlight as one of the lead performers in Sunlake High School’s production of William Shakespeare’s As You Like It. The classic comedy, which follows the adventures of the courageous and love-struck Orlando, proved to be the perfect stage debut for Calem, who took on the demanding role with enthusiasm and remarkable talent.
Shakespeare’s As You Like It centers on themes of family conflict, resilience, love, and disguise. The story begins with Orlando, a young man who, after the death of his father, is left with nothing by his older brother, Oliver. Tired of being mistreated and denied his rightful inheritance, Orlando finally takes a stand. His bravery, however, puts him in immediate danger, as Oliver arranges for the wrestler Charles to kill him. During this confrontation, Orlando unexpectedly meets Rosalind, and the two instantly fall in love.
Their budding romance is short-lived when both Orlando and Rosalind are banished from their home. Fleeing into the Forest of Arden with his loyal servant Adam, Orlando soon realizes they have no food. In desperation, he attempts to steal from a group of forest dwellers. Instead of reacting with anger or violence, the humble group welcomes Orlando and Adam with compassion, offering them food and kindness. This moment becomes a turning point where Orlando begins to see the goodness that exists beyond the corruption of his old life.
Later, when Orlando encounters Rosalind again, he fails to recognize her because she is disguised as a young man named Ganymede. Taking advantage of her disguise, Rosalind playfully convinces Orlando that she can cure him of his love for Rosalind. These humorous interactions set the stage for emotional growth, comedy, and eventual reunion.
Calem portrayed Orlando—one of Shakespeare’s most beloved romantic heroes—with confidence and energy. Reflecting on his favorite moment, he said, “My favorite part of the play was when I got to fight with Charles,” referring to Orlando’s dramatic wrestling match. Although this was Calem’s first time performing in a play, he landed the main role and exceeded expectations.
Calem joined the production thanks to encouragement from a friend who had been urging him for years to try acting. Growing up, he always enjoyed performing, but he had never shared his talent publicly. Being part of As You Like It finally allowed him to reveal his passion for acting—and he embraced it fully. Through dedication, courage, and natural skill, Calem helped bring this timeless Shakespearean story to life on the Sunlake stage.
