The students at Sunlake are, understandably, ready for winter break to begin. The holidays always bring some sort of warm energy to the air, and the spirit among students and staff has never been higher than it is this year. For the week of December 1st through the 5th, the school hosted a winter spirit week, meant to encourage students to show off their excitement for the upcoming festivities. Stella Reimer; Freshman, participated in the final day of the week (Friday) for the holiday pajamas theme. “I wore Christmas crocs, blue flannel pants, and a black hoodie,” she describes. The crocs in particular were the highlight of the outfit for sure, being green, white, and red with multiple Christmas themed jibbitz and small candy canes as a pattern.
Stella did not participate in the previous days of spirit week for two reasons. One of those being that she simply wasn’t aware of the activity. She believes that the school could have done a better job in advertising and promoting the spirit week, and stated that if she had known about the week beforehand, she likely would have tried to take part in it. That is, if the themes appealed to her or piqued her interest. She went on to share that she hadn’t participated in either of the previous spirit weeks from this year. When asked why, she noted that the themes those weeks had weren’t too exciting, and she felt a lack of motivation to take part.
She specifically enjoyed pajama day and its concept because wearing comfortable clothes is what entices her, as it does for most other students. When questioned about a theme or series of themes she would like to see in or as a future spirit week, she replied, “I feel like we should do, like, a spirit week where you wear clothes for your favorite sports teams, or like one day you wear your favorite team and then the next day you wear your least favorite…” Essentially, she would like a sports week, which could possibly be successful considering how seriously Sunlake students take their athletics.
