Three innovative senior students, Jannah Dedic, Samantha Mungai, and Sophia Rodriguez Perez banded together in forming the Women in STEM club at Sunlake. A new and emerging student-led group embraces our hard-working female students that are interested in pursuing STEM careers. One of these girls, Alissa Brunton, says “I think this club truly gives the women at Sunlake a safe space to feel empowered by others.” She’s planning on pursuing law or political science and is also interested in microbiology and molecular sciences. To her, this club provides the members with a strong, supportive community of women that also strive for a successful future.
Sophia and the other officers that started this club wanted to foster a student-led association for girls interested in the sciences and mathematical fields. She says, “We wanted to create a space for them to share their ideas and learn more about what science field they would like to study!”
Additionally, Alissa even created her own club as well—The Future Focus Club. She has a passion for forming communities on campus so that other students can feel supported and form bonds with members alike.

When asked for why she decided to join the club, she said: “I joined the club because I believe women are powerful and deserve a place in male dominated fields, and I was excited to meet like-minded people!” For the founders and members of this club, their excellence and determination reflect and embody the high achieving women that seek fields in STEM. Getting to know the other hard-working girls in the club also created a stronger sense of community.
Meeting in Mrs. Campers room every third Wednesday of each month, members of the club learn about a new historically significant woman for scientifical and mathematical achievements. At their first meeting, they learned about Jane Goodall, her conservationist efforts revolutionizing scientific understanding of animals and endangerment.
