Mu Alpha Theta continues to be one of Sunlake’s most engaging academic clubs, combining problem-solving, leadership, and community service into one rewarding experience. For member and junior Lexi Csuhai, joining the club was an easy decision. “I wanted to join Mu Alpha Theta because I love math, and I heard I could play fun math games and tutor kids struggling in math,” she shared.
At the club’s most recent meeting, members enjoyed a holiday-themed celebration that challenged their skills while keeping the atmosphere lighthearted. “We had a bunch of different math problems, from Algebra 1 to Algebra 2, which really tested our abilities,” Lexi said. The activity allowed students to collaborate while sharpening their math problem-solving skills.
As the club’s secretary and president of the tutoring campaign, Lexi plays a key leadership role. Her favorite part of Mu Alpha Theta is hosting after-school tutoring sessions for Algebra 1 students. “It gives me a refresher on old topics while still serving to help students in need,” she explained. Algebra is her favorite subject, especially systems of equations and factoring, which she describes as “quick and fun to do.”
Mu Alpha Theta has helped Lexi strengthen her understanding of Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Geometry, while also preparing her for advanced challenges through AMC practice sessions. “The AMC is definitely challenging, but it pushes us to think in new ways,” she said.
One of Lexi’s favorite traditions is the annual Pi Day scavenger hunt. “It’s really funny to see everyone scrambling around campus trying to win a free pie,”
Lexi believes Mu Alpha Theta stands out amongst the other Sunlake clubs because “it requires you to actively think while still having fun with your friends.” Her proudest moment came when a tutoring student thanked her after doing well on a test. “It really warms my heart to know we’re helping,” she said—a reminder that math, at its best, brings people together.
