Isabella Gray, a senior at Sunlake High school, sat at her desk surrounded by scraps of paper tapping her pen on her head. As the founder and leader of the Creative Writing Club, she has spent the last two years building a space where students can explore their imaginations. “Its a nice supportive environment where writers can come together and share their work and get feedback,” Isabella said. Back in 2023 Isabella recalls The first meeting vividly, it was small, just a couple of students crowded into a classroom, nervously clutching their pens and introducing themselves. “It was nerve-wracking and I did not quite know what to do because I have never stated a club before, ” she said. “Now I feel a lot more confident and I have solid grasp on how to give feedback to writers to help them grow their skills,” Isabella stated reflecting on all the practice she has had over the past years.
Under Isabella’s leadership, the club has flourished. Meeting weekly, Creative writing welcomes writers of all experience levels, from first-time poets to seasoned storytellers. The club transforms an ordinary classroom into a lively hub of artistic exploration, filled with the rhythmic scratch of pens, the quiet tap of keyboards, and the hum of minds buzzing with ideas. Here, students can experiment with a wide variety of writing styles, from short stories and poetry to scripts, essays, and even experimental forms of prose. The club offers workshops where members give and receive thoughtful feedback, honing their skills while building confidence in their own voices.
As she prepares to graduate, Isabella hopes the club will continue to grow. “I have high hopes for this club in the future” she said, “I want this to continue to be a place where writers can express themselves and improve on their skills long after I’m gone.” Creative writing isn’t just about putting pen to paper or typing on a computer, it’s about telling stories, supporting others, and creating a community where everyone’s voice matters.
