Sunlake High School held an induction ceremony for all the new members of the Math Honors Society, also known as Mu Alpha Theta. This club is a honor society for students who excel in math. Among the new inductees was junior Miranda Anderson, who shared her motivation for joining Mu Alpha Theta. She decided “…to join because it looks great on college and scholarship applications.” This sentiment reflects the understanding among students of the value that membership in honor societies can bring to their academic and professional pursuits. When Miranda walked in to the induction ceremony, she “…felt welcome… by the students and teacher…” who created a supportive environment. The induction ceremony, a significant event for Mu Alpha Theta, was conducted under the guidance of Mrs. Camper, the dedicated teacher leading the club. During the ceremony, each new member was called by name and walked up to the front of the room to receive their certificate and the club shirt. Then everyone joined together in the commons area to take their club picture for the yearbook. To finalize the ceremony, they “…had cake to celebrate” in Mrs. Camper’s classroom. ThisĀ gathering provided an opportunity for students to bond and further solidify their connections within the club. In math club, they do “…different math based activities at each meeting,” according to Miranda. The activities they do can relate to any branch of math, such as geometry or algebra, which demonstrates the club’s commitment to exploring the diverse facets of the subject. Moreover, members actively contribute to the academic community by offering tutoring and additional assistance to fellow students who may be struggling with mathematics. As the members continue to engage in various math-based activities and extend their assistance to peers, the impact of Mu Alpha Theta extends beyond the induction ceremony, leaving a lasting imprint on the school’s academic culture.
