The faculty of Sunlake High School aim to provide kids with the opportunity to express themselves freely, as well as explore all fields that pique their interest. Sometimes, students find themselves most engaged, focused, or other wise in-their-element in academic-based clubs. One of Sunlake’s newest clubs, the Women in STEM club, emphasizes the encouragement of women to pursue passions in science, mathematics, tech, or engineering. “By participating in the club,” states Ms. Camper, the club sponsor, “women can gain insight into the many STEM fields out there and meet others like them who are interested in STEM. At the Women in STEM club meetings there will be guest speakers and activities, and members will discuss ways to promote more women in stem careers.”
Ms. Camper is one of the many brilliant math teachers at Sunlake, and due to her experience, the concept of sponsoring a club like this really spoke to her. She notes, “Sophia Rodriguez-Perez wanted to start the club and asked if I would be the sponsor. I was happy to help since I have witnessed the lack of women in STEM fields firsthand and wanted to help get more women involved in STEM. In college, I was often the only woman my math classes, and it was sad to see women shy away from math and science.” Ms. Camper hopes that by hosting a club of this nature, it will allow more girls to get invested in STEM career paths.
Aside from the Women in STEM club, Ms. Camper also values her job as an educator. When asked, Ms. Camper remarked that the highlight of her school year so far, “…is teaching AP Precalculus. I was fortunate enough to teach it last year and I really enjoyed it. Now I get to teach it again and make it even better. I’m excited about that.” Ms. Camper is the only AP Precalculus teacher here at Sunlake, and she strives to help her students reach the highest standards possible with their mathematic skills. She adds, “I’m looking forward to the last quarter of the school year where I get to really help my students understand the math they learned all year and see how it all fits together. I can’t wait to see them come out of the AP exam and tell me how well they did and how much they knew. That’s the best part of my job. I love seeing my students succeed.”
Ms. Camper truly is a treasure of a teacher, not only doing her job as thoroughly as possible, but also ready to assist her students whenever they need her.
