Lexi Vitale recently attended the Florida Scholastic Press Association (FSPA) conference, an event that brought together student journalists and yearbook staffers from across the state to learn, create, and connect. Lexi was drawn to FSPA by her interest in photography and the various aspects of yearbook production, eager to experience live sessions with professional photographers and students from other schools.
“My main goal was to learn more about photography and different parts of yearbook, while also seeing how other schools approach their work,” Lexi explained. “It was exciting to be in an environment where everyone shared the same passion for storytelling and visual creativity.”
One of her favorite parts of the conference was a photography session during the third session block. There, she gained hands-on experience with essential techniques, including exposure, shutter speed, and capturing the perfect shot. “That session really helped me understand the technical side of photography and how to apply it in practical ways,” Lexi said. “It’s something I’m excited to continue learning about on my own.”

FSPA wasn’t all work, though. Lexi fondly remembers the lighter moments, like the lunch break, which turned into a humorous highlight. “When we got lunch, most of my friends went to Panda Express, which was really bad,” she recalled with a laugh. “I went to Chicken Salad Chick instead, and it was sooooooo good!”
The conference also gave Lexi insight into her own growth as a journalist and yearbook staff member. Attending FSPA exposed her to new ideas in photography, illustration, and design, inspiring her to teach herself and explore more creative techniques. “It showed me that there’s always something new to learn, and it motivated me to push myself further,” she said.
Lexi encourages other students to take advantage of this opportunity. “Definitely do it! FSPA is a great chance to explore USF, learn about all aspects of yearbook, figure out your role, and gain advice from professionals who can help you improve your skills.”
For Lexi, FSPA was more than just a conference—it was a chance to grow, connect, and get inspired for the year ahead in journalism and photography.
